Antes in Poker Games

Colloquially, the term "up the ante" means, to raise the stakes or to make something more challenging. The word has its origins in a hugely popular group of card games, called poker. There are several different kinds of poker games, and there are also very many different ways of playing them, but one of the many things that poker shares is betting rules, and the fact that it is possible for a person to win a game of poker simply by bluffing. Almost all poker games also share hand rankings as well.

In poker, an ante is a kind of forced bet. Almost all poker games, regardless of the poker variant, begin with forced bets. This is what gets the proverbial betting ball rolling. In making an ante, all of the players put an equal amount of money or chips into the pot before the designated dealer -whether this person is a casino employee, or in more casual settings, one of the players- deals out the hand. Usually, the amount of money that a player puts up in an ante is a very small amount. Normally, it is about a quarter to one half of the minimum amount that is conventionally bet, especially in formal gambling establishments like casinos. The ante that each player pays makes sure that even if a player folds early, they still lose money. This often keeps players in the game and playing their hand, and prevents them from folding early as they hope to win back what they had wagered. Usually, not only does an ante ensure that more players stick around and do not dispose of their hands, but it also increases the pot size, which certainly keeps things more interesting in a game of poker.

There are many different kinds of poker games, but these can be classified into four main families of poker variants: straight, stud, draw, and community. Antes are most commonly the kinds of forced bets made in many draw poker and stud poker games. Draw poker is when players are dealt a complete hand, face-down. After dealing, players then make their bets and then are allowed to look at their cards and try to alter or develop their hands by drawing new cards and discarding ones that they no longer need. Stud poker, on the other hand, is where players are dealt cards face-down and face-up in a prearranged combination or sequence. Face-up cards in stud poker care called "streets," and after each deal, there is normally a round of betting.
