Poker and Stereotyping Players
A lot of Poker strategy guides will tell you that stereotyping is one of the deadliest mistakes you can do in the game. it is true that in most cases, this will be so, but at the same there will instances when it can actually help you.
Stereotyping players, of course, means applying familiar or conventional concepts or traits to an individual. For example, if a Poker player is soft spoken and timid, the assumption will be that that player is weak tight. An elderly woman is usually perceived to be a rock, and a man with a boorish manner a maniac.
Of course, those conventions do not hold always. The elderly woman may in fact play in a tight aggressive manner, and the soft spoken fellow on the button may be a loose aggressive, and the boorish one is a weak tight player who folds to every raise.
The fact is that a lot of skilled players take advantage of being stereotyped. A player that dresses like a tourist but is actually a tight aggressive player, and the novice who may look like he does not what he is doing is actually well prepared.
That being said, it is also important to remember that in certain situations stereotyping can still be effective. This is particularly true when you are playing home games. Here Poker players tend to be more relaxed and their demeanor is something they usually do not consider as part of their strategy.
When playing online, knowing the stereotype can also be useful, as the way players chat will quite often be similar to the way they play their Poker hands. When you play on the Internet, a lot of your opponents will not even try to change their image or personality, thinking that it cannot be detected when you are not "live".
Of course, there will also be times when you will have to rely on stereotypes when playing. If the new Poker player behaves in an aggressive manner, and after a few hands you notice he just keeps on raising, then they may fit the traditional image after all.
Part of what makes Poker the unique game that it is is due to the fact that things can be what they seem to be, or not. The key will be on how well you read the sitiat0on, and the more you play the game, the more you will learn this to be true. So with stereotyping, always try to get a read on the situation.
